How to Get Paint Out of Carpet

Paint and carpet don't mix, but a spill isn't the end of the world. Maybe you're mid-renovation in a Cool Springs home, or the kids got creative with the craft supplies. Either way, the key is acting fast and using the right method for the type of paint. We've pulled out every kind of paint stain over the years, from bright latex splotches to dried-on acrylic, and the steps below are what actually work.

Prep the Area First

Before you grab any cleaner, take a minute to set up. Block off the spill so nobody steps in it and tracks paint across the room. If you can get to the backing, slide a plastic tarp or garbage bag under the stained area to keep paint from soaking into the subfloor. Open windows and run a fan, especially with oil-based paint, to clear fumes and speed drying. If you rent or might file a warranty claim, snap a photo before you start.

What You'll Need

  • Clean white cloths or paper towels
  • Mild dish soap, the kind that cuts grease
  • A spray bottle or bowl and cold water
  • A sponge or soft-bristled brush
  • A plastic scraper or dull knife
  • Mineral spirits or acetone (oil-based paint only)
  • A fan or dehumidifier for drying
  • Gloves if your skin is sensitive

Know Your Paint

The type of paint decides how you clean it.

Latex (water-based) paint is the easiest, especially while it's wet. Dish soap and water usually handle it. The longer it sits, the deeper it soaks in, so timing matters.

Acrylic paint is similar but contains plastic polymers that dry faster and grip harder. Once it dries it forms a flexible coating that's tougher to lift.

Oil-based paint is the hardest. It needs a solvent and a careful hand. Always ventilate and wear gloves.

Step-by-Step Removal

Step 1: Act fast. Gently blot the paint with a clean white cloth. Don't press hard or smear it. For a big spill, work from the outside edges toward the middle to keep it contained.

Step 2: Identify the paint. Check the can. Latex or acrylic means a gentle cleaner. Oil-based means solvents and extra caution.

Step 3: Mix your solution. For latex or acrylic, combine 1 teaspoon dish soap with 1 cup warm water. For oil-based, dampen a cloth with a small amount of mineral spirits or acetone.

Step 4: Dab the stain. Blot from the edges inward, using a clean part of the cloth each time. Repeat. This takes patience. For dried paint, let the solution sit a few minutes before blotting.

Step 5: Rinse and dry. Wipe the area with a towel dampened in cold water, blot dry, and aim a fan at it. Stay off the spot until it's completely dry.

Tips for Tough or Dried Paint

Loosen dried paint first with a scraper or an old credit card. Let your cleaner soak for five to ten minutes before blotting, and plan on several passes. Skip the bleach and ammonia, which can burn or bleach the fibers. Always test in a hidden corner first, and dry the area thoroughly so damp carpet doesn't turn into a mold problem.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

The easiest paint stain is the one that never happens. Cover the carpet with drop cloths taped down at the edges, pull up area rugs before you start, keep pets and kids out of the work zone, and seal cans the moment you're done.
